My review of THE HUNDRED TRILOGY

About the series:

Conquering Norse, Scottish lore, Wars of Independence, Ancient mystics from the isles, and invading English…this trilogy has a bit of everything. Each book in the series is a standalone, but they can be read in or out of order. There are overlapping characters, but each story is its own. The trilogy spans 1263 through 1322 A.D. in medieval Scotland and tells the tale of the MacCoinneach clan family members gifted but afflicted with a mystical ability that comes at a cost…

…to heal but lose your own breaths in return (A Hundred Breaths), to feel auras/lifebloods but to feel others’ pain (A Hundred Kisses), and to see the future but be powerless to prevent the events while being unable to touch others (A Hundred Lies)…

Can our mystical family hone their gifts for good, escape curses, discover mercy, find home, and uncover love?

As the muse struck Jean, book 2 (Kisses) was published first (2017) but is the middle book. The prequel (Breaths) came next. And finally, Lies releases August 5, 2020. To help the reader (or if you are like me and love a visual aid), I’ve created a genealogy chart, map, and glossary. All are found on her website here: https://www.jeanmgrant.com/extras

A Hundred Breaths:

Healing his heart…with her last breath.

 1263, Scotland

Simon MacCoinneach’s vengeance runs deep. The blade is the only way to end the blood-thirsty Nordmen’s reign upon Scottish soil. His soul might be lost, but the mystical Healer he kidnaps from the isles could be the answer for his ailing mother…and his heart.

Isles-born Gwyn reluctantly agrees to a marriage alliance with this heathen Scot in return for the sanctuary of her younger brother from her abusive Norse father. Her brother’s condition is beyond the scope of her Ancient power, for larger healings steal breaths of life from her own body.

As Simon and Gwyn fight to outwit her madman father and a resentful Norse betrothed, Gwyn softens Simon’s heart with each merciful touch. Gwyn’s Seer sister foresees a bloody battle—and an end to the Nordmen—but Simon will also die. Will Gwyn save Simon on the battlefield even if it means losing her last breath?

A Hundred Kisses:

A broken past, a broken heart…and a broken curse.

 1296, Scotland

Two wedding nights. Two dead husbands.

Deirdre MacCoinneach wishes to understand her unusual ability to sense others’ lifeblood energies…and vows to discover if her gift killed the men she married. Her father’s search for a new and unsuspecting suitor for Deirdre becomes complicated when rumors of witchcraft abound.

Under the façade of a trader, Alasdair Montgomerie travels to Uist with pivotal information for a Claimant seeking the Scottish throne. A ruthless baron hunts him and a dark past haunts him, leaving little room for alliances with a Highland laird or his tempting daughter.

Awestruck when she realizes that her unlikely travel companion is the man from her visions, a man whose thickly veiled emotions are buried beneath his burning lifeblood, Deirdre wonders if he, too, will die in her bed if she follows her father’s orders. Amidst magic, superstition, and ghosts of the past, Alasdair and Deirdre find themselves falling together in a web of secrets and the curse of a hundred kisses…

A Hundred Lies:

Is their love just one more lie?

1322, Scotland

Rosalie Threston's fortune-telling lies have caught up with her. Uprooted yet again, she's on the run from a ruthless English noblewoman. She flees to Scotland and seeks refuge in the arms of a laird's son who happens to be a real Seer.

A bloody past and inevitable future plague Domhnall Montgomerie. He avoids physical contact with others to ease the painful visions. When an accidental touch reveals only delight, he wonders if Rose is the key to silencing the Sight.

Mystical awakening unravels with each kiss. But can Domhnall embrace his gift in time to save her life, even it means exposing her lies?

My review:

I’ve read each of these books and reviewed them all, but I had to say a word about them for those considering the bundle.

The descriptions are above, so I won’t bore you with that. As you can see, each book is in a different time with different characters. What connects them besides their family ties – for me is the voice of the author giving life to the characters and a clear vision of the settings. She truly brings the late thirteenth and early fourteenth-century to life in the readers' minds.

Each story stands alone and can be read in any order. But, you must read them all. Jean Grant has written great Historical/Romance/Adventure you’ll want to keep on the shelf or on your kindle and recommend to your friends and family.

I gave each of these books five stars as I read them. I could do nothing less for the collection. *****
