What is Samhain?

To most who celebrate the holiday, the meaning of Samhain (sa: win) is summer’s end. It’s the time when the harvest has been gathered and the leaves begin to fall.

This time is also for remembrance of those who've passed before us. Some believe that the veil between the dead and living is at its thinnest on this night. They use it as an opportunity to give thanks to their ancestors and ask nature for another fruitful year.

The next day begins a new earth cycle. The celebration of birth and renewal.

Traditionally, Samhain is celebrated by the family gathering around an outdoor fire, sharing a meal and telling stories of family who've passed over.

Now that doesn't seem so sinister, does it?

The traditional food for a Samhain feast uses fruits and vegetables from the fall harvest. Here are a couple of recipes you may like:

  3. I'm actually reading the original to my children - the language is a bit advanced for them to read it on their own. I might try the recipe out on them also!
